Bermuda Grass Bermuda grass has long been the choice turfgrass for low maintenance lawns with sunny conditions. Bermuda grass is known for its drought, salt and wear tolerance. It is quick to establish and to recover from injury. Bermuda exhibits the characteristics of Common Bermuda with the high quality of a hybrid (Tifway, Tifgreen). Bermuda is a semi-dwarf variety and has been the number one Bermuda grass in overall turf quality in the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program for the last four years. If you want fine texture with ease of care, Bermuda is what you are looking for. Applications: Bermuda can be used on residential and commercial sites, ball fields, soccer fields, as well as the more obvious choice of fairways, tee boxes, and greens collars. Characteristics: Bermuda is a semi-dwarf with internodal length shorter than that of Tifgreen. It also has a very fine blade width, finer than Tifgreen, with a typical hybrid Bermuda green color. It is very dense with a rapid rate of spread. It has proven to be very aggressive and spreads by both stolons and rhizomes. These characteristics contribute to its rapid recovery rate. We have found that despite its density, the thatch build-up in Bermuda seems to be less than with other hybrid Bermudas. Installation & Maintenance: Bermuda cannot be grown from seed. It must be planted as plugs, sprigs, or sod. Sprig planting is recommended only for experienced landscapers. Plugs are our planting method for those of you who cannot sod your site, but solid sodding is the best way to go. The site should be watered heavily for at least two weeks to promote establishment. After establishment period is over, keep a regular schedule of watering and mowing. Recommended mowing height with a rotary mower is 1-2 inches. You may reel mow at ¾ to an inch. Fertilization: Recommended annual fertilization rate is one to two pounds Nitrogen per 1,000 sqft. Use split applications with one pound Nitrogen in the spring to encourage new growth and one pound Nitrogen in mid-to-late summer to promote healthy growth into the fall and winter. |
